Center for Reformation Theology and Spirituality

What is the Center for Reformation Theology and Spirituality (CRTS)?

The Center for Reformation Theology and Spirituality cultivates rigorous scholarship rooted in the theology of Martin Luther and the broader Reformation while intentionally recovering and deepening the spiritual resources of that tradition. In conversation with the wider Reformational heritage — including the devotional seriousness of Calvin’s Geneva, the pastoral reforms of Bucer, the confessional consolidation of Bullinger, and the liturgical and catechetical shaping of Cranmer — the Center seeks to situate Lutheran theology within the larger catholic movement of sixteenth century renewal.

Rooted in Word and Sacrament, formed through catechesis, confession, hymnody, and disciplined prayer, the Center fosters a distinctly Lutheran spirituality — one marked by the theology of the cross, confidence in divine promise, and a life ordered by repentance and faith, lived under Luther’s formative Three Rules: oratio, meditatio, and tentatio. Yet it does so in awareness that the Reformation was a many-voiced movement of renewal within the one holy catholic and apostolic Church. While rooted in a distinct theological heritage, CRTS is not a sectarian initiative. It is reformational in spirit, catholic in scope, and ecumenical in engagement. It welcomes students, scholars, and partners from across the global Christian community who desire serious theological reflection anchored in Scripture and oriented toward the life of the church.

Standing firmly within the authority of Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, the Center serves the Church by uniting theological clarity with spiritual formation. Its work will include research initiatives, publications, conferences, and programming designed not only to articulate Lutheran doctrine, but to engage the broader Reformational tradition and its continuing relevance for Christian life and witness in the contemporary world.

The Center serves pastors, scholars, and congregations by cultivating theological depth, confessional integrity, intellectual courage, and spiritual vitality, thereby strengthening ILT’s founding commitment to Scripture, confession, and serious theological reflection in service to Christ’s Church.

The Center works to:
  • Recover the classical reformational grammar of Christian faith
  • Engage Scripture with scholarly seriousness and ecclesial fidelity
  • Bring historical theology into disciplined dialogue with contemporary philosophy and culture
  • Form pastors, scholars, and church leaders capable of clarity, depth, and courage

Why the Center Matters Now

The contemporary church faces deep and accelerating challenges:
  • Doctrinal confusion and theological fragmentation
  • Erosion of confidence in the truthfulness and intelligibility of Christian claims
  • Spiritual fatigue within pastoral leadership
  • The need for serious theological formation across denominational lines
In many contexts, theology has become either thin and pragmatic or detached and merely academic. CRTS seeks another path: intellectually rigorous, spiritually grounded, and ecclesially responsible.

The Reformation was not only doctrinal; it was a spiritual awakening under the Word. CRTS advances rigorous, reformational scholarship while cultivating prayer, catechesis, and ecclesial life. We serve pastors, scholars, and congregations with theological depth and spiritual vitality.

An invitation

The church in every age must decide whether it will drift with cultural currents or be renewed by the Word that calls it into truth and life.

The Reformation reminds us that theological clarity is not an academic luxury; it is a pastoral necessity. CRTS exists to serve that conviction in our time — to cultivate leaders who think deeply, speak faithfully, and serve courageously.

We invite you to join us in this work of renewal.
